Elevenses, Friday 16 October, Heritage with Heart – A Dementia Inclusive Toolkit for Cultural Venues
In this Elevenses presentation, Laura Cunningham will share the thinking behind her new dementia‑friendly toolkit – a practical resource shaped by two decades of hands‑on experience in museums, heritage sites and community settings.
Cultural venues have a powerful role to play in improving wellbeing, confidence and connection for people living with dementia. Yet these venues can also present barriers. This new toolkit is designed to help venues become as dementia‑friendly and inclusive as possible, while recognising the realities many teams face: building constraints, accreditation requirements, limited budgets and stretched capacity. This talk will explore the contents of the toolkit in greater detail and is intended to raise awareness, break down barriers and offer practical guidance and advice.
Laura Cunningham is a Cultural Heritage Freelancer, based in Cheshire. She has been training and creating services to support people living with dementia for 20 years. Having worked in education and visitor experience roles in the sector, Laura also has a working knowledge of the challenges facing venues and has used this to inform the recommendations made in the toolkit.
