Capital Development Network, Monday 21 September, Museum of North Craven Life, Settle
The MDN Capital Development Network meetings are an opportunity for the museum sector in the North of England to share learning, get peer support, and hear from a variety of speakers across a range of topics around planning and delivering capital development projects.
Each session will be held at a venue that has undergone capital development projects and focus on current and future climate resilience. The overall theme of this network session is ‘Understanding your repair and maintenance challenges and how to prepare and plan for a Capital Project whilst continuing to engage stakeholders’. Please note that as this is an active capital development, places will be limited, so we request a maximum of 2 representatives from an organisation attend.
We will hear from The Museum of North Craven Life about the ongoing programme of repairs to Grade 1 listed Folly, built in the late 1670s. There will be a tour of the site, along with other talks, including Katharine Boardman from the Arts Council, and opportunities for discussion and networking.

10.30-10:40 MDN Welcome & Introduction to the day, Kaye Hardyman and Sue Hughes, Museum Development Advisers, Museum Development North
10:40-11:10 Heather Lane, Honorary Curator, Museum of North Craven Life will discuss their experience of planning and delivering a MEND project, including the pre-application work and fundraising.
11:10-11:40 Liz Haestier, Overton Architects will talk us through the works being undertaken at the museum and the problems which triggered the need for action.
11:40-12:00 Caitlin Greenwood, Heritage Development Officer will talk about the challenges of delivering a service during a capital project, how to deal with changing plans and keeping volunteers and stakeholders informed during the process.
12:00-1.15 Lunch
1:15-1:45 Katharine Boardman, Arts Council England will talk about the key challenges for museums in the North including maintenance, repair and understanding current and future climate impacts
1:45-2:15 Owen Plummer from Purcell will take us through some top tips for maintenance plans and quinquennial reviews.
2:15-3:15 The group will be split into 2, with one group taking a tour whilst the other completes an exercise focused on maintenance schedules and plans – then swap over.

The Future Preparedness Programme is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to design a programme to support museums in the north of England to respond to and prepare for climate disruptions through a series of workshops, bespoke support, events and a funding opportunity.
Access please note: the organisation is in the middle of a capital development project, hence the museum is not as accessible as it would usually be. Entry to the museum is by 3 uneven steps. The main meeting will be in the Horner Gallery which is on the first floor and accessed via one flight of stairs. The toilets are on the ground floor. Tours will involve, at a minimum, climbing stairs and walking on steep and uneven ground. These will be limited to a small number at a time, so we will stagger them during the afternoon session. Catering: As part of MD North’s commitment to environmental responsibility and carbon reduction, catering for our in-person events is vegetarian and vegan. We encourage you to bring a reusable hot drink cup and water bottle, and perhaps a Tupperware to take home any leftovers to minimise food waste.
