Transforming Collections: De-accessioning and Disposal, Online
Are you looking to develop the collections at your museum to ensure they are relevant for today and in the future?
The Transforming Collections programme is a series of sessions designed to help us to think about how we can explore, question, and review collections and collections information collaboratively to build more inclusive collections development practices.
This session will look at how collections deaccessioning and disposals are an important part of responsible collections development practices, set within legal and ethical frameworks.
We will explore this topic with the help of the Museums Association and a talk about the Off the Shelf toolkit, and the Collections Trust who will talk us through the Spectrum standard and suggested procedure for de-accessioning and disposal. We will also hear from Tullie, Carlisle about de-accessioning and disposal in-practice.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Understand the Spectrum 5.1 standard and procedures for de-accessioning and disposal
- Know more about ethical and legal frameworks to guide your decision-making processes
- Understand the benefits of carrying out de-accessioning and disposals
- Have thought about the information that might need to be recorded as part of the process
- Begin to think about how your organisation might approach or continue a programme of de-accessioning and disposal.
