Transforming Collections: Collections Review, Online

Are you looking to develop the collections at your museum to ensure they are relevant for today and in the future?

The Transforming Collections programme is a series of sessions designed to help us to think about how we can explore, question, and review collections and collections information collaboratively to build more inclusive collections development practices.

This session will explore how and why museums might conduct collections reviews as part of responsible collections development practices, from deepening our understanding of collections to identifying gaps in the representation of perspectives or communities in collections.

Collections Trust will give an overview of the Spectrum standard and suggested procedure for Collections review, and we will hear from Gawthorpe Textiles Collection about collections review in practice. We will think about the motivations that can lead to conducting collections reviews and talk about the steps you might take and tools you might use as part of a review process.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand the Spectrum Collections review procedure
  • Build understanding of collections review processes and motivations
  • Find out where to look for case studies, tools and resources to help you conduct collections reviews
  • Understand the benefits of undertaking collections reviews
  • Think about the resources needed to conduct collections reviews
  • Begin to think about how your organisation might approach collections review and who you want to collaborate with.
