Join us in Sheffield for the next Brew Up! Industrial and Social History Collections Network meeting where the theme of the day will be Using ‘Lived Experience’ To Present Industrial Heritage Collections/Sites – Best Practice And The Next Generation
People with ‘lived experience’ – those who worked in past industries or lived alongside those industries – are a highly valuable asset for engaging audiences and helping modern visitors to understand the past reality of industrial heritage sites, activities, and the communities that were an integral part of industrialisation. Indeed, many such enthusiasts were responsible for preserving our disappearing industrial heritage in the post war period, and as technologies and industry have moved on, so new generations have participated in that process (see the National Videogame Museum for example).
Making best use of – and fully supporting and developing – that key resource of volunteers and staff with lived experience often defines the best industrial heritage attractions today. But at the same time there is a big challenge here. It is inevitably the case that those previous generations, with all their skills, enthusiasm and knowledge, are not here forever. How do we pass that ‘lived experience’ to future museum staff and volunteers, and sustain its core value to the interpretation and contemporary relevance of industrial heritage sites and collections?
With talks from museums and opportunities for discussion and networking (the full agenda will be available shortly), this day will explore best practice in using ‘lived experience’ and where we go next with this approach to industrial heritage presentation. You’ll also get to see the National Videogame Museum with a guided tour, and perhaps get the chance relive a misspent youth on Sega and Atari!!
Access: The National Videogame Museum is located in Sheffield City Centre. It is easily accessible by tram, car (nearby multi-storey car park), train (tram, bus or 8 minute walk from Sheffield Station) and bus. The museum is on one ground floor level and has flat access throughout (including the Activity Room where will be based). There are disabled toilet facilities near the reception desk.
Catering: As part of MD North’s commitment to environmental responsibility and carbon reduction, catering for our in-person events is vegetarian and vegan. We encourage you to bring a reusable hot drink cup and water bottle, and perhaps a Tupperware to take home any leftovers to minimise food waste.
