Sustainable control of collection environments

Why do we need to control temperature and humidity of the spaces in which collections are held? How much control is needed, and what are the best ways of providing it?

Traditionally, environmental control involved the provision of fixed levels of relative humidity and temperature with minimal variation (fixed levels are also liked by engineers who design systems able to achieve this). In the last 10-20 years it has been questioned whether these fixed levels are necessary, and whether they need to apply to all types of collections.

The climate crisis has provided an additional context and encourages us to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases associated with the burning of fossil fuels to generate energy. Environmental control requires a sustainable approach, using passive control measures before those requiring energy, balancing requirements based on risk, and allowing a flexible approach to appropriate levels of control.
