Elevenses, Tuesday 17 December, BioBlitz Events – Making the Most of Your Green Spaces
Have you ever taken part in a ‘BioBlitz’? ‘Bio’ means ‘life’ and ‘Blitz’ means ‘to do something quickly and intensively’. Together they make ‘BioBlitz’, a collaborative race against the clock to discover as many species of plants, animals and fungi as possible, within a set location, over a defined time period (usually 24 hours).
Join our Elevenses to hear about Norfolk’s Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse’s 2024 environmental species surveying event delivered in partnership with Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists’ Society, and be inspired to bring a BioBlitz event to your site whether you have big or small green spaces. Events Officer Fiona Ashley will share more about the team’s experience of hosting a family-friendly BioBlitz at a museum to get visitors engaged with its green spaces, how it informed future planning and what they learned in the process.
BioBlitz is an informal and fun way to create a snapshot of the variety of life that can be found in an area. Bringing scientists, students and members of the public together, it provides an opportunity for participants to learn together and share their expertise and enthusiasm for nature. This is a great way of breaking down barriers to engagement with science and raising awareness of the role of biological recording, upskilling wildlife enthusiasts whilst casting the net wider to introduce new audiences. The BioBlitz network have lots of resources to help you develop your own event.
Insightful, interactive and informal, come along to gain new insights from our guests, meet colleagues from the region, and connect with the MDN team. Everyone who works and volunteers in museums is most welcome, including museum freelancers who want to stay connected.
