The Annual Museum Survey provides a comprehensive report on the operating context of museums in England giving insights into the sector’s health as well as the challenges and opportunities it is facing. By benchmarking data generated every year, it has been possible to spotlight past and current trends such as the impact of the pandemic on volunteering and finances. In 2025, it tells a story of local authority reliance and support, a positive outlook for many museums and wider economic impact accounting for visits, employment and procurement.

Head of Museum Development North, Michael Turnpenny will summarise the 2025 results and explore how you can use the findings to benchmark your operational activity and demonstrate your social and economic value.  He will also detail how you can engage with, and benefit from, taking part in the 2026 survey.  Completion of the survey will be a prerequisite of applying for MD North Open Grants.
