Accreditation Standard Redesign

Museum Development North logo

During 2025 Arts Council England has been reviewing the UK-wide Museum Accreditation Scheme with funding support from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The result will be a redesigned Accreditation Standard to replace the previous update carried out in 2018. The aim of the redesign is to improve the usability and accessibility of the Accreditation Scheme, and to ensure it reflects the needs of the current sector.

The review is being undertaken with input from participants in the Accreditation Scheme across the UK. The key areas of the process are:

  • Reviewing and updating the outcomes for Accreditation
  • Updating the Accreditation Standard
  • Redesigning the process for application and assessment
  • Improving the use of data

More information about ‘Reshaping Accreditation’ can be found here.

The redesigned Accreditation Standard will be published in 2026.

The Accreditation redesign process will not impact on museums due to submit an Accreditation Return before the publication of the updated 2026 Standard. Arts Council England has put together a useful list of Frequently Asked Questions to provide more information and guidance for participants in the scheme and those seeking to join. You can find these FAQs on the ACE website.
